American and British music (50's & 60's)
Jan 20 2011, 1:37 PM EST
I enjoy listening to all these types of music, such as The Drifters, The Platters, The Jarmels from America, etc, etc, and something closer to home, Herman's Hermits, Small Faces, The Searchers, Freddie and the Dreamers. Any likes on these? Cheers! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I saw the Searchers at a NYC amusement park called Freedomland (no longer there) back in the mid-1960s. I was screaming along with all the other kids, but for some reason, drummer Chris Curtis took note of me and gave me a personal smile--I have never forgotten that moment! I also love the Honeycombs; wish there could have been more from them. Gene Pitney had a smash-hit in Detroit in the early 1960s called "24 Hours from Tulsa," which never got airtime in NYC. I was visiting cousins in Detroit every summer back then, and that's the only way I know about this wonderfully dramatic song. Anyone ever hear it? Once heard, never forgotten! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

There was also another song of his which I absolutely adore "Something's got a hold of my heart" that was shown on TV there too back then. Have you heard of it? 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Gene Pitney was very big in Australia and probably also bigger in the UK than he was in his home country (US). 10 top 10 hits in Australia including 'Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa' which reached number 3. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. "I'm impressed that you like Cliff Richard! was he popular in the US as he was and maybe still is with the grannies in the UK?? !!"I'm actually Australian so we used to get a fair mix of both British and US music on the radio in the early sixties. Cliff Richard got a lot of airplay. A lot of our local artists used to cover his songs on our version of Bandstand and other music shows. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thanks for telling me that "24 Hours from Tulsa" made it to #3 in Australia--now I am inspired to look for it on YouTube. Maybe I can actually find it and hear it again. Like I said, I only heard it during summer visits to Detroit for a couple of seasons while it played on the radio there. In New York I have never heard it at all, so it's been over 40 years!

Some of his later songs (Devil Woman, Wired for Sound, We don't talk anymore) were also very big hits for him in Australia. Movies like Summer Holiday, The Young ones, Wonderful Life still pop up on our TV from time to time.....and the Shadows were very big over here as well. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Okay, I now have the mp3 download of "24 Hours from Tulsa"! After 45 years, it's mine, all mine!!"Enjoy. He's my favourite all-time but because of his distinctive voice it's usually a case of folk love him or don't care much for him. Gene Pitney toured Australia a fair bit in his later years, doing the club circuit over here, and was as good live as on his records. I've heard a Dusty Springfield version of '24 Hours from Tulsa' that's also worth a listen. Just regarding "Something's gotten hold of my heart."........ This was originally a big song for Pitney back in 1967 when it reached number 5 on the UK charts. In 1989 he re-recorded it with Marc Almond from Soft Cell. The record was a number one hit in Britain. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Yes, that's right. He and Marc Almond were No.1 in the UK charts around this same month, I think, in 1989 with this song, I remember watching them on TOTP, it seems like only yesterday !!I also spotted Marc Almond in Notting Hill in that year too, he looked like a little garden gnome!! I am very glad to hear that The Shadows were popular in Australia and just so deserve it, they were marvellous, great guitar-playing from Hank. Do you know if they were a success in America? if their talent was appreciated over there? Do you find this valuable? |

"I am very glad to hear that The Shadows were popular in Australia and just so deserve it, they were marvellous, great guitar-playing from Hank. From what I could find out with a quick search of charts and other info ….Cliff toured the US with the Shadows in the early 60’s. They were on the Ed Sullivan show but they never really seemed to have a lot of success in the States.Cliff did have some minor success with songs like "Devil woman" , "We don’t talk anymore" and his duet with Olivia Newton John "Suddenly" The Shadows didn't have a lot of success in the US but they did OK in Canada where they had a number of top 10 hits with Cliff. 'Apache' was a hit in the States but it was a cover version by Danish guitarist Jorgen Ingmann. Hank Marvin's work has been listed as an influential by artists including Fran Zappa, Neil Young, Randy Bachman and Carlos Santana which are pretty good references. Hank Marvin lived (think he still may) in Western Australia for a while. My cousin in Perth has met him. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thank you for the info - it is indeed, very interesting, and as such, it's their loss and our gain, in a way!!By the way, what's your update on Judith ? (forgot her surname) from The Seakers? I read tha, sadly, t her husband died a few years ago, are they still together as a group and doing any comebacks? I know they were very popular in the UK in the mid 60's. I have a vid of theirs showcasing two of their concerts, one in London (1965) and the other in Australia, maybe Melbourne? supreme talent and a great sense of humour - love the Aussie humour! Every so often the group reforms and does a bit of a tour. There's supposed to be an Australian tour coming up with the Violinist Andre Rieu later this year. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
